Our Team

Mosaic SD is led by a group of amazing volunteers.  Even the Pastor, Derrick Miller, is a volunteer.  Derrick is a full-time firefighter for San Diego City.  He and his wife Laurel moved to San Diego after serving for a number of years at Mosaic Los Angeles.

Their passion for a community like Mosaic to exist in San Diego compelled them to extend Mosaic beyond Los Angeles.

While Derricks education is in Biblical Studies from Fresno Pacific University, his career as a firefighter gives him an interesting perspective and unique style.

Derrick is known for being an outdoors-man, a lover of food and music, and has a curious mind.

When he’s not at work or leading Mosaic, he can be found exploring the world, surfing, and spending time with his wife Laurel and son Blake.

Laurel has a love for connecting people. She is gifted at helping others discover their strengths and maximize their potential. At Mosaic, Laurel loves to introduce people to volunteer staff mentors who walk through a conversation about the values that shape our beliefs- Life in Christ.

Laurel is a graduate of Keck School of Medicine at USC as a Physician Assistant. She works with Family Health Centers of San Diego to provide caring, affordable, high quality healthcare and supportive services to everyone, with a special commitment to uninsured, low income and medically underserved persons. Laurel also works as an emergency room doctor at hospitals throughout the city– hopefully you’ll never have to run into her there– But if you do, you’re in excellent hands.

The Miller’s home is a place where the door is always open. Laurel and Derrick are known to be great hosts of gatherings, celebrations, and meetings. Their son Blake and dog Dexter are always on hand to offer entertainment.

Chalese Dunton has been a part of Mosaic since day one and has never looked back.  In addition to being the worship leader, she also serves as a small group leader, a mentor, the production team coordinator, and guest speaker on Sundays.

If Chalese is not at Mosaic, chances are you can find her at some local hangout with a group of friends, half of whom she probably met last week!  To Chalese, no one is a stranger and that is why she loves calling Mosaic her “home”. Chalese always says that Mosaic is her “Monday through Saturday” church and enjoys being a part of a community of people who love living life together.

In addition to her work at Mosaic, Chalese also teaches high school English full-time and coaches varsity softball, keeping her very busy.  She has lived in Golden Hill for the past five years and is excited to see God move in downtown San Diego in new and exciting ways!

Randy has lived in San Diego for over three years now. Randy loves being in the center of cities and feels like God placed him in San Diego after living in Northern California, Ventura County, Pasadena, Thailand, and Lanzhou, China. Randy and his wife Jennie have made friends that are unforgettable throughout their travels, and now they have the pleasure to be in one of the great travel destinations and having many friends come visit them here.

Randy teaches biology at the oldest High School in the city (and one of the oldest in California): San Diego High School. His students give him a clear view of the challenges families face here, and they are a constant reminder that he has a great gift to offer them. Randy strives to follow Paul’s example to, ‘become all things to all people’. While he doesn’t have the freedom to speak about his faith, but he knows he is always free to love them.

At Mosaic, Randy spends his time waxing floors and waxing poetic. He journeys through life, and works with a team of people who care deeply about making the facility comfortable for whoever comes through the doors each week. Randy also acts as an advisor and elder to the pastoral staff.

Randy and Jennie have been married 31 years. They have three adult children, David, Lian, and Lauren. Lian is married to their ‘new’ son Brynnen and they have Randy’s one and only grandchild, Wyatt. Randy’s extended family is spread as far north as Santa Rosa, east to Washington, D.C., and we have a niece in Kampala, Uganda. We keep busy staying in touch with all of them.

In 2008, Jayme moved to San Diego to finish her schooling at Point Loma Nazarene University. She quickly fell in love with the beautiful weather and views that San Diego has to offer and decided to make it home with her husband Danny.

Jayme’s jump-right-in attitude has given her the chance to be on a number of committees, teams, and planning boards. Through various jobs, she has become familiar with everything San Diego has to offer by working in hospitality, business, and for the San Diego Padres. As a new mom, her latest ‘job’ includes visiting local parks, the Zoo, and dropping in to have lunch with friends around town.

In her spare time, Jayme manages communication on the Mosaic website, blog, newsletter, and with church contacts and visitors. She works with ministry teams to organize events, fundraisers, and outreaches. She also facilitates the SHE ministry with a team of passionate Mosaic ladies.
