On April 7th, we began a 10-week conversation that follows the book of Acts.

When Jesus ascended into heaven, His Spirit descended to earth and ignited a chain reaction that would change the course of human history forever. The movement of the Church began and continues, to this day, to be a powerful force of good in the world. Join us as we go back to the origins of the early church and begin to excavate the guiding principles and essence of the first “People of The Way” through the book of ACTS.

Throughout the series we’ll be posting breakdowns of the scriptures visited and reflective questions– to work through on your own, or with a community group.

APRIL 7 REFLECTIONS

Readings

ACTS 1 and 2. // 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 // Galatians 5:22-25

Discussion Questions

Read Acts 2:42-47
What have been some of your experiences (good and bad) with the Church? What should the Church be, according to Acts?

Read Acts 1:1-9
How do you see the purpose of your life aligning with the purpose of the Church?

Read Acts 2:14-17 and 1 Corinthians 12:4-11
On Sunday Derrick talked about how God not only wants to communicate with us, he wants to commune with us. He wants us to know Him, and He wants to dwell within us.
How does God communicate with us? How does God commune with us?
In what ways have you experienced the Holy Spirit? How have you seen the Holy Spirit work within your life and/or the lives of people you know?

Read Galatians 5:16-26
What fruit of the Spirit do you see in your life and/or the lives of people you know?

Why do we sometimes see so little “fruit” in our lives and in the lives of people who call themselves Christians?

What are steps we could take to live a more spirit-filled life and produce more of the “fruit” Paul talks about in Galatians?

To prepare of next weeks message on April 14th, read Acts 3 through 4:31

On Saturday, March 16th, Serve San Diego (the service team within Mosaic San Diego) partnered with Flood church and Amor Ministries to build a home for a needy family in Tijuana, Mexico. Marc Wallis, our ServeSD director offers a snapshot of that day:

The De Los Sandos Sanchez family has a home now – a home they’re proud of. And though its meager by our standards, the level floor, stable walls and water-proof roof are more than the family could have ever hoped for on their own. Julio, the family patriarch, works at a local doorknob factory. And he, his wife Laura Elena and three kids are able to earn only $75 a week – just enough to cover the essentials.

So it was impossible to contain a smile as we watched the Sanchez’s run their hands across the wooden front door (a simple sheet had served this purpose earlier) and giggle as they practiced opening/closing their new glass windows – a luxury that will help protect against the dust, wind and rain for the first time.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me take a few steps back and walk you through the day – because there clearly wasn’t a finished home when we arrived.

Step 1: Get up (harder than it sounds). I’m not an early riser, and I don’t care about a stupid worm – the morning bird can have it – so getting up at 6:30a is not typically how I start a Saturday. But hey, it’s for a good cause, right?

Step 2: Drive to Tijuana. Sounds easy and it usually is – not that day. Mexican border control pulled us over for a reason I still don’t understand (unpaid equipment fee?) Luckily, our potentially long delay was shortened to only 45 minutes after some guys from Amor Ministries (the non-profit we were partnering with for the build) showed up to wheel and deal us outta the situation. Gracias Amor.

Step 3: Drive to build site. Sounds boring, but was a lot of fun. The family lives on a mountain with the kind of sprawling valley view an artist could turn into a masterpiece. I just used Instagram. The road there was bumpy, but in a fun way…think Indian Jones ride at Disneyland. More bumps actually, less giant rolling boulders…but the same massive fire-breathing/laser eyed snake. Kidding…

Step 4: Build house. The foundation and frame were already done, so we had three man jobs: 1) Cover the walls with stucco/concrete 2) Hang the doors and windows 3) Complete roof.

The first job took the most people and the most time. Basically, we broke into 4 groups and engineered a simple assembling line. The first group sifted course sand into finer sand. The second group mixed this sand with water and cement to create the stucco/concrete. The third group filled large metal trays of the mix and ran them to the final group, the “putter-onners” who used trowels to smear and smooth the mixture onto the walls, resulting in a strong, insulated and weather proof structure.

Step 5: Take breaks to eat lunch, play with family dogs and build sand forts and sweet micro-machine car jumps with Brayan, the 5 year old son.

Step 6: Eat amazing tacos. After the house was complete, we piled in the van and headed into town to eat delicious, authentic street tacos. It was impressive to watch these guys. They could bust out like 30 tacos a minute. Impressive, eh taco bell? And you can’t beat the flavors..although part of me wishes the street tacos were in a Doritos nacho cheese shell…

Step 7: Cross the border, arrive home, sleep incredibly well. The two hour border wait, surprisingly, was one of the funnest parts of the trip. It was such a great bonding time. We laughed and joked and played “would you rather” and trivia games the whole way, and reflected on what we had done that day. There are few things in this world that bring people together and develop community the way serving together does…..or being forced to wait in a crazy long border crossing line..

Now that we’ve been home for a few days, I think back to the moment we finished the house and were gathered around to celebrate. As we tiredly formed a circle in front of the home, the Sanchez family produced a 2-liter bottle of Orange Fanta and gingerly poured it into foam cups as if it were a prized bottle of Dom Perignon.

Beaming, they passed around the precious liquid for a toast and I began to think about what we had really done that day.

Honestly, Saturday morning I wasn’t feeling very well. I was getting over a bad cold and the last place I wanted to be on my day off was in the Mexican desert slapping concrete onto walls. And, since I’m being honest, even as we worked I wondered what good we were really doing. After we finished the Sanchez family would still be in need. Their city still a place full of poverty, inequality and brokenness - and our world a place with far too much darkness. What had our little act and little sacrifice really done in the grand scheme of things?

But it was in that moment, seeing the Sanchez’s genuinely happy faces, that I thought – maybe the big picture doesn’t matter right now? Maybe this moment matters. Or maybe the big picture, which can be so daunting and bleak, is really just made up of thousands and millions of little moments like this. Our job as Christians is to love. All of us who claim to follow Christ are called to love our neighbors, our enemies and the “least of these.”

The love we are called to is a sacrificial one. It requires us to give up something, be it our time, resources, energy, etc. to show others that they matter. Maybe sometimes that love falls flat and seems to have no effect– but maybe sometimes the person who loves, and the one who receives it, are changed.

I know that simple housebuilding trip, as insignificant as it seems, changed me for the better. And can’t help but smile when I think back to the Sanchez’s joy and their new home.

We have been working hard towards our goals of building improvements, a cohesive branding design, improved sound quality of worship, and building a strong financial base to provide us the ability to continue to chase both your dreams and ours within San Diego and God’s kingdom as a whole.

Our Lead Team has been diligently working to organize and structure Mosaic SD in such a way that each person who steps through our doors will have an opportunity to both be served and find a place to serve. We continue to pray for, and seek someone to fill the role of a paid assistant pastor. Until that role is filled Laurel Miller, and other Lead Team members, have taken on those extra responsibilities. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered with us over these past months. Along with juggling full-time jobs, families, and other hobbies, the Lead Team members really couldn’t see Mosaic SD grow without your help.

The online giving program we outlined at the beginning of the year is now up and running… thank you for your patience as we worked to make the system as easy to use as possible. Recurring giving allows us the ability to forecast projects, purchase equipment, and send our ministry teams out into San Diego and beyond.

The season on Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, with the ashes signifying a reminder of the temporary home we have here on earth. Lent is a period of 40 days (excluding Sundays) prior to Easter Sunday. During this time, we observe moderation and discipline– spiritually and physically. As we set time aside daily to reflect on Jesus Christ’s suffering and sacrifice, we are able to mourn the pain that sin inflicts, repent our sins, and celebrate the gift of life we are giving in His resurrection.

This morning, a group of us gathered together to partake in communion, worship acoustically with Aaron Smith, and receive ashes.

Our good friend Kurt Willems offers a further view into what Lent means to us today.

This particular season, Lent, is a time to enter into the dark places within our souls. We are invited to allow the Holy Spirit to search us and to know our hearts. We call attention to the things that bind us up from living out the reality of the Kingdom of God and attempt to starve them. In a nation of affluence and values that often corrupts the beauty of the cross, sometimes our gluttonous lives need to have a time to experience a hint of starvation. For some this is literal (those who fast from food during Lent) and for others this is metaphorical (those who starve their subtle idols).

My default, often influenced by my American affluence, is to abstractly believe in “the fundamental change of life required of those who would die with Jesus and be raised to new life in him,” but to concretely reach for comfort. Ash Wednesday is a chance to confront these sorts of tendencies—to starve them.

#1 Starving our idols places our lives with Jesus in the desert.

#2 Starving places us in solidarity with our sisters and brothers throughout the world who barely have enough bread to live.

#3 Starving reminds us that Jesus was a human who chose each moment to live by the “word of God.”

#4 Starving creates space for a proverbial kick in the @$$ to remind us that the American Dream is the very thing robbing us of a more intimate relationship with God.

I cannot express the depths of my gratitude for each of our volunteers…your time, sweat, energy, and heart are priceless! Thank you a million times over for everything: our garden is going to be gorgeous, and I could not be happier with how everything worked out (rain and all couldn’t stop us!). Most importantly, thank you for just being such genuine souls, you are all amazing! We are fostering lasting relationships with our partners at GenerateHope and I appreciate your sincerity on getting involved. The girls had a lot of fun and will hopefully now be able to enjoy a gift that keeps on giving; their garden will continue to nourish them and serve as a therapeutic, symbolic outlet as well. Victory Gardens made everything possible for bringing our garden to life, and for that, I am ETERNALLY THANKFUL!!!!!

Below are a number of ways to stay involved:

1) ServeSD. For those interested in helping out with the hard work we put in to building a healthy, beautiful garden for our GenerateHope family: our first follow-up to meet to answer any questions, educate, and do a little gardening is on Saturday, March 2 from 9 until 11AM. We’ll meet again at Mosaic 30 min before to carpool. ServeSD is looking for ongoing volunteers to help the girls ultimately maintain the garden, plant new crops with the seasons, continue with beautification projects, help with cooking classes, etc. The best way to become a part of this is to let me, Jaime Perkins (jperkins88@gmail.com; 310-606-0263), know that you want to be involved. Furthermore, ServeSD has many different types of projects going on that we would love to have you collaborate with us on and we meet every month to plan new outreaches. If you’d like to be a part or our emails, please email me or Marc Wallis (marcwallis85@gmail.com) to be in the know on all of our philanthropic adventures!

2) GenerateHope. For those interested in collaborating with GenerateHope outside of (or in addition to) our gardening, please visit their website and fill out an interested volunteer sheet (http://www.generatehope.org/getinvolved/#3volunteer). Then, you’ll attend a training, I believe the next one is on February 20th. After your background check is cleared, Susan can get you plugged in to different ways to help out the foundation. Such an incredible mission!

3) Victory Gardens. My little garden gnomes! There were several of you wanting to get that thumb a bit greener, so here’s some more opportunities. Victory Gardens has a ton of really wonderful opportunities to get involved with the community through numerous projects. Here is their primary website: http://www.victorygardenssandiego.com/. You can get on their mailing list for events and such, they always have something going on. Visit their Indiegogo “Growing Food…Growing Confidence” project website (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/310317) to see what else they are up to. They also have, for example, another course going on February 9, 16, and 23 from 9a-1p where you can learn about garden tools, garden siting considerations, testing and developing good soil, composting, building a variety of garden beds, plant selection and planting, integrated pest management principles and harvesting your bounty. If you take this course, you could be eligible for a home garden build as well. To sign up, email your interest to the Co-Director for VGSD Bob Greenamyer (bob@victorygardenssandiego.com); the cost of the course is $60, but if you have financial hardship, just let him know.

Alright, here is me sending all my good energy to all of you! 2103 is going to be a fantastic year, and please let me know if there is anything I can help you with to get plugged in. We want you to serve and contribute in ways that are meaningful for you…let’s go change the world!!! Yeah!

Best,
Jaime Perkins

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to those of you who were able to come to the homeless outreach event with Walk a Mile in Their Shoes last night. It was a huge success and such an incredible mission to be a part of.

I was blown away at the heart and passion of the people we were serving with (majority were members from Church of Rancho Bernardo who have been doing this for years.) We learned so much about homeless people and that type of outreach. We also had a blast talking with people!!

The CRB people we were serving with have established real relationships with some of the people on the streets and you can see the outward love and joy radiating from their souls when they saw us coming. They truly feel so loved and encouraged. We were able to sit and talk with many of them for a good 10-15 minutes to be an ear, a voice of hope, and encouragement, and many of them wanted us to pray with them, which was an amazing experience. Truly humbling and inspiring.

The few of us who went last night left wanting more. Wanting to go back every night to care for these people. I truly believe investing in these people is the best way to help them. We are going to continue partnering with Walk in Their Shoes and I am hopeful that with the more Mosaic people we get on board, the more clear it will be of our direction for the future in this ministry. I encourage every one of you to pray about joining us. This group goes out the 2nd and 4th Mondays of every month (so the next time will be Feb 12)

Thank you for you heart and passion in this ministry and please continue to pray, because the homeless people need community just as much as we do. To live by faith, to be known by love, and to be a voice of hope…

One of our new friends, Wanda who decorated her tree downtown for Christmas. She’s currently battling breast cancer and getting treatment but gets sick frequently and is hoping to be approved for Connections Housing soon! Please pray for Wanda, she has such a beautiful, vibrant soul!
